Robert Rauschenberg first collaborated with John Cage and Merce Cunningham in the
summer of 1952 while a student at Black Mountain College. He took part in an event
organized by Cage known as Theatre Piece No.1. Less than two
years later, Rauschenberg created a free-standing object (an early Combine) for the
Cage/Cunningham work Minutiae (1954). For the next ten years,
Rauschenberg toured with the company, designing décor and lighting for twenty
dances including Nocturnes (1956),
Summerspace (1958), Aeon (1961),
and Winterbranch (1964). After a thirteen-year hiatus,
Rauschenberg returned to design
for Travelogue (1977), and in later
years Interscape (2000)and XOVER (2007).
October 22, 2025, marks the hundredth anniversary of Robert Rauschenberg’s
birth. We are thrilled to be participating in the worldwide celebration of his
centennial with a variety of projects including a new production of Summerspace by
the Wiener Staatsballett; performances at Museum
Brandhorst (Munich) and Museum Ludwig (Cologne) as part of the
exhibition Five Friends: John Cage, Merce Cunningham, Jasper Johns, Robert
Rauschenberg, Cy Twombly; new stagings of Suite for
Two and the duet from XOVER; a special program at
the Art Gallery of Ontario, and, in collaboration with the Trisha Brown Dance
Company, a national tour of Travelogue and Set &
Reset.
