Carolyn Brown first encountered Merce Cunningham in a master
class he taught in April 1951. “I’d never seen anyone move like Merce: he
was a strange, disturbing mixture of Greek god, panther, and madman.”
Carolyn soon began training and rehearsing with Merce and in 1953 she
became one of the founding members of his first company. She continued to
dance for and with Merce until 1972, originating roles in forty dances,
including such iconic works as Suite for Five, Antic Meet,
Summerspace, Night Wandering, Crises, Aeon, Winterbranch, Scramble,
RainForest, and Walkaround Time.
Carolyn Brown was heralded throughout her career for her
elegant, technically exquisite dancing and her riveting performance. Her
2007 book Chance and Circumstance: Twenty Years with Cage and
Cunningham chronicles her remarkable journey and her profound place
in dance history.
We mourn her passing and remember her with awe and
gratitude.
